So what does it take to stand out among the giants like Timex and Casio? Phosphor Watches has been making E Ink based watches for some time, and they recently released the World Time. The World Time features a curved E Ink display that is form-fitted to your wrist. The extreme contrast of the e-ink paired with the ability to track any timezone makes for a potent package for the digital connoisseur.

Here are the specs:

Curved E-Ink display.

35x9.3mm thick (5mm at edge).

Twin timezone display.

5 user-selectable display modes.

50m WR.

MSRP of $150-$195.

The main draw factor of the Phosphor World Time is its Electronic Paper Display, manufactured by E Ink. It's a low-power, high contrast screen that quite literally looks like printed paper. I found this display to be excellent, viewable at almost any angle and still very usable in low light. The screen is the same technology as the one used in the Amazon Kindle.

As a watch, the World Time works out well, its curved case and simple one button interface is a good example of clean design and form meeting function. The button is actually a rocker switch of sorts that can be pressed on either side. The left side can be held down to change the contrast set of the screen (either black on white or reverse white text on black). The right side of the button cycles through the different display modes that show the time as small, large, world time, time plus world time, and time plus calendar (see the included video). The review model provided by Phosphor came fitted to a black polyurethane strap that is flexible and comfy as well as stylish.

Seiko has been flirting with E-Ink technology for a while (and will have something to announce very soon), but the Phosphor is available now and for a very reasonable price. Phosphor is selling the World Time direct from their website for $150 on a rubber strap, $165 on a leather strap, and $195 on a stainless steel bracelet.

We really like Phosphor watches, and this one does not disappoint. It's well made, stylish, tech-savvy and easy to use.

We would like to thank Phosphor Watches for providing a review sample.

The name stands for "The Watch in Steel" and is the mission statement that can be seen guiding their brand through the tumultuous process of launching a watch company. They have strong ties to all levels of motorsports, and have developed a solid brand identity in building large watches with bold and flashy style.

The TW680 RF1 CEO Tech is a quartz chronograph with a little extra style. It was designed in partnership with the Renault F1 Team, and the entire line is a departure from the usual TW Steel look and style. Let's start with some facts:

44x14mm case.

OS25 quartz chronograph movement from Miyota.

1/20th of a second resolution.

Date display.

316L case.

Sapphire crystal.

100m WR.

Silicon rubber strap.

MSRP of $750.

The first thing you'll notice about the TW680 is the stark contrast of its beautifully edged case and the included rubber strap. The case, crystal, and dial have a very jeweled appearance which flow nicely into the clasp used with the strap (see video and photos). As it turns out, the rubber strap is a very high quality, very soft and stretchy, and a delight to wear.

The whole package is somehow style neutral; I could see wearing the TW680 with jeans, a suit, or even a flame retardant race coverall. The design carries bespoke elements like the star shaped inlays on the bezel, and the fine polishing of the pushers and the edges of the bezel, and it pulls it all together with a nearly 3D dial, racy sub-dials, and a dust resistant rubber strap.

The movement is the Miyota OS25 quartz chronograph which has a 1/20th of a second resolution on the six o'clock sub-dial. This chronograph movement is without trickery or needless complication; top pusher starts the chrono, push it again to pause, then depress the lower pusher to reset. There is a maximum read of 59 mins and 59 seconds, and the 1/20th hand only spins for the first 20 seconds.

The black dial is tightly compacted under the sapphire crystal which appears to have an under anti-reflective coating (see the blueish colour of the crystal in the video). The dial markers for hours on the TW 680, are not simply painted on or even flat inlays; rather, they are fully raised numerals which gives the watch a much better depth and a finish not generally seen at this price point. The hour, minute, and seconds hand are yellow to give the TW680 a little more race appeal. The chapter ring is a tachymeter as is customary on many race watches as the scale can be used to measure average speed around a given circuit. As previously mentioned, the case is very well finished with a mix of brushed and polished surface with strong but not sharp edges, and a very solid feel.

The TW680 retails for $750 which is in the upper range for a quartz chronograph. However, the price is less than a quartz Tag Heuer and most Tissots while providing an excellent fit and finish. I throughly enjoyed wearing the TW680, and found it perfectly sized for my 7.5 inch wrist (if you want something larger there is a 48mm version as well -- the TW681). TW Steel also makes a version of the RF1 line that is PVD coated with gold accents.

The TW680 is a very well made, nicely styled, race inspired chronograph that is comfortable to wear and easy to use. We would like to thank TW Steel for providing us with a sample to review.

With a history that dates back to the late 40's in France, there are many watches in their past. In fact, at one time, I even owned a Yema Seaspider Auto. It was a rugged yet slim diver powered by a Seiko automatic movement, and was one of the few watches I regret selling.

The new Yema expands on its past with series of new collections (Diver, Land, Pilot, Racing, and Limited Editions) based largely on quartz movements. In this review, we will take an in-depth look at the YMHF0310 300m Diver: an all digital divers watch that focuses on practical features and a simple user interface.

Let's start with the details:

47x15.5mm.

22mm lugs.

Chrono, temperature, countdown timer, time zone, and depth meter.

EL Backlight.

Stainless steel case and bracelet.

Digital display.

Mineral glass crystal.

Bidirectional bezel.

High-gloss black PVD.

MSRP of $695 (Watch Report readers can use the coupon code "watchreport25" for 25% off).

So how does a newer Yema compare?

The Yema 310 diver is a thoughtful and throughly useful interpretation of the modern digital dive watch. As with most dive watches these days, the Yema is large -- 47mm across, and 15.5mm tall. It's not especially heavy (I wore it on the included rubber strap), but it will block most sleeves and cuffs. The screen is divided into a large area at the top and a lower area for additional info and current menu selection. There are four pushers enabling the feature select, stop/start/reset, and the EL backlight.

The screen is a reverse LCD with a slight greenish hue. The screen's contrast is very good, but not at all angles as sometimes it appears washed out. Feature controls are dead simple; the screen tells you what function you are dealing with, and buttons on the right side of the case handle starting and stopping the measure. On the main time screen, you can view the date, running seconds, and even the current temperature (this feature is likely more accurate while submerged as the temp of my wrist seemed to add a few degrees to the reading -- a common problem with digital thermometers built into watches). The countdown timer, chronograph and second time zone work beautifully, and the EL backlight is very bright.

The Yema 310 Diver comes fitted to the steel bracelet, and Yema includes a very nice fitted rubber strap in the box. After having a fair amount of trouble sizing the folded steel bracelet, I moved the Yema to the included rubber strap, which is excellent. I highly recommend the rubber strap over the bracelet which is very comparable to the bracelets included with some entry level G-Shocks; its not solid steel, so it rattles, and it uses folded steel end-links as opposed to the far superior solid variety.

I should mention that while this Yema diver includes a dive recorder, I was unable to test it as I had no opportunity to dive with the watch.

Yema is selling these direct from their website for $695 before any discounts, however they have been kind enough to create a custom WatchReport.com coupon code, so no need to pay full price. If you are interested in this or any of the other models Yema makes, use the coupon code "watchreport25" to get a full 25% discount. In the case of the Yema YMHF0310 Diver, you get a very nicely built and thoughtfully designed digital dive watch that is easy to use and includes a very comfortable rubber strap. I really enjoyed wearing this watch, and found the feature set completely useful and totally practical.

Please read on for the full review and pictures.
As with the H262LWS, the 7060 impresses as soon as you open the outer packaging. The presentation box is the same cherry-finished wood: quite elegant and very unusual at these prices. Once you open the box, the next thing you realize is that this is a watch meant to be noticed, full stop. At 49mm across by 15.3mm thick, the size is quite imposing, and at 260g, it is not a light timepiece.

The face and bezel have some very unusual design cues for the racing theme. Notice that all of the hour markers except 12 are canted toward the inside, matched by the same design on the bezel. To me, it looks a bit like a turbine blade or propellor, and conveys a sense of motion.

The hands are the broadarrow style: nicely blue in color, and painted with enough lume to be quite readable at night. The seconds are the rightmost subdial; one of the tradeoffs of a 3-register chronograph is that the constant seconds are a bit harder to read at a glance.

If you look a bit closer, you'll see another unusual feature: the subdials are mother of pearl, which has a nice iridescence as the angle changes. As I noted earlier, this combined with a deep red background makes for a watch that gets noticed.

The bracelet is very good. Solid links and end links, nicely made with the more expensive screwed links, its heft is a good counterbalance to the weight of the watch. The signed clasp has two of my favorite bracelet features: pushbuttons and micro-adjustments to get the fit right. Details matter!

On the wrist, the 7060 is somewhere between massive and epic. 260g is 9.2oz, making this the heaviest I've reviewed by 10 grams. It's a big chunk of steel.

The Bianci page is not clear, but from the off-axis color tint, I think the sapphire crystal has an inner anti-reflective coating; a good thing.

Here you can see that on my 7.25" wrist, it actually fits pretty well. The lugs wrap nicely, and the profile is beveled a bit at the bezel. It works with loose cuffs but would have problems with tailored ones.

The Swiss quartz movement (not specified, but probably ISA or Rhonda) is conventionally battery powered and simple in function: date, H/M/S, and 30-minute chronograph with fractional seconds at six o'clock. You can read within a tenth of a second accuracy, making the watch useful for racing or cooking (my main use for a chronograph). The bezel is also useful for timing, and has a diver-style unidirectional ratchet with a nice firm feel. Chronograph buttons have a definite snap to them are easy to use with no mushiness.

One correction: the Bianci site lists a screw-down crown; it's not, but for a non-dive-watch, that's usually preferred.

Fit and finish are quite good. Note the evenly brushed surface and conformal fit of the end links. Excellent work -- especially for a $329 price.

This is more of a fashion watch then we usually review here on Watch Report, but from a functional point of view, it does very well. It's well made from excellent materials (steel and sapphire), it has a very legible dial, and it represents an excellent value. The style part is subjective, but if you want something better made than Fossil and its ilk, then the Pro Racing is an excellent choice.

Our thanks to Bianci for the review watches; always appreciated.

But the question is, do they stand out?

As many indie brands have enjoyed a vogue spotlight, competition is fierce, yet the 300m Diver has been enjoying a steady stream of positive reviews in the online collector space. Artego was kind enough to send us a review unit so we could take a closer look for ourselves.

The Artego 300m is large and heavy, and feels like a tool watch as soon as its on-wrist.

The cushion style case is smooth, well finished, and slightly contoured so it sits comfortably on your wrist. The closed lugs suit the bracelet well, but the Artego 300m Diver looks great on a strap as well. On the bracelet, I can confirm it is heavy, solid, and very tool-diver in stature. The old-school hands and inky black high gloss dial are displayed behind a sapphire crystal with an internal layer of anti-reflective coating.

The screw-down crown is very nice with a confident feel not often see at this price point. The bracelet is very similar to the ones found on the Halios Bluering and Holotype: nicely finished, screwed together, and without rattle. It has a push-button fold over clasp that is made of very thick metal.

The overall construction of the Artego 300m would best be described as solid. The unidirectional dive bezel is light, but very "clicky" and easy to set on a specific point. The hands and markers are painted with luminous paint and function very well; they glow very brightly and can last most of the night from my tests (please see the video). Timekeeping comes by way of the trusty Miyota 8215 seen in many other watches, and this example was running within the normal range at about ±12-15 seconds over 24 hours (it's actually closer to ±10 seconds when it never leaves your wrist).

The Artego 300m Diver embodies much of what we like about dive watches, and the quality was more than I was expecting given the reasonable entry price of $350. The chunky case, solid crown, and excellent bracelet make this a viable watch for any owner accepting of the size. When you stack this small brand against a large competitor like Seiko, its easy to see the appeal: vintage styling, reliable movement, and a better price point makes the Artego 300m Diver a great choice in a dive watch.

We would like to thank Artego for providing a review sample.

Please read on for the full review and pictures.

One of the nice things about watches as a hobby is that there continue to be new companies creating new and interesting watches. Bianci contacted us and offered to send us a couple watches for review, and I am quite pleased to report that they make good stuff.

Let's start with the packaging. For the price, the cherry-finished wooden box is an unusual and luxurious touch. The outer white cardboard box has warranty card and serves mainly to protect the display box.

The watch case and bracelet are "ceramic" which actually refers to several different materials (see wikipedia for more on ceramics). Chanel is the inspiration for this design, with their iconic 1999 introduction the J12. Other companies such as Rado made earlier ceramic cases, but I'd say that Chanel popularized them with a style popular with both genders.

If we look at the back, you can see how the caseback screws directly into the ceramics, and how the crown has an inset cabochon of the same material.

Depending on which particular ceramic this is (it looks like an alumina-based oxide to me), it should wear extremely well. There's no details given as to hardness, so it's impossible to say for sure. It should maintain the high-gloss finish and color much longer than stainless steel would.

The bracelet, aimed at women, does not latch. The butterfly deployant is held closed by spring action and is invisible on the wrist. Practical and minimal, and since this is more of a dress watch, a good solution. Notice in the picture that there are still steel pins in the links; some parts are more practically made of metal.

As an aside, note that the bezel is actually a divers' design, rotating unidirectionally. However, since there's no markings, it's basically an artifact and not functional for timing. Maybe they could put a different jewel color as a zero marker? Could be a nice and unique touch.

The ceramic is hard to describe. It's semi-translucent and very glossy. From a distance, it can look like the sheen of plastic, but in bright light you can see a glow as some light penetrates and is reflected out. Interesting stuff, and a cool way to make a watch.

Between the sapphire crystal and ceramic case, this should be a watch that stays new looking for many years. I'd recommend it for the woman who likes a nice watch but can be hard on things.

Value is very good to excellent. Sapphire and ceramic is very rare for the $329 Bianci is asking. The fit and finish are quite nice all around, and the display case makes for a nice presentation. (Yes, she'll think you spent more than that when she unwraps it!)

Our thanks to Bianci for the review watch, and stay tuned for the review of the Pro Racing model.

The Pathfinder line is famous for melding large LCD screens with navigational and atmospheric data, all in a wrist-top package. The Casio PAG-240 uses a new duplex screen, and a new manner of navigating its many features.

This mid range Pathfinder sports most of what the higher end models have but, omits the radio synchronization for timekeeping. This allows the 240 to come in at a lower price but still offers much of the feature set available in the higher end models.

Casio has refined the PAG-240 with a new duplex screen which incorporates the main screen and an additional layer of "lines" on top. These lines can display an additional time zone, compass information, sunrise and sunset, or help you cycle through the menus. The new menu navigation is possibly the best feature of the PAG-240; as you cycle through the modes the duplex screen indicates what mode you are currently in -- a huge improvement over the previous navigation systems. Combine that with the small matrix screen at 11 o'clock, and you can get a lot of information all at once without having to keep pressing buttons (see the video review for a demonstration).

In the past, I have not been able to wear an ABC (altimeter, barometer, compass) watch full-time because I always found they were too complicated to be instantly usable, but this is not the case with the PAG-240. The PAG-240 combines useful features and an intuitive user interface into an unbelievably light package. This Pathfinder actually weighs nearly half as much as the last dive watch I bought, and feels comparatively like you're not wearing a watch at all.

Retail price for the PAG-240 is $250 which is a good price for the complete package the Casio has going with this watch.

They are a well known brand making affordable and reliable watches for a wide range of styles competing at the Seiko/Citizen range. We previously reviewed the CEM75001B and its smaller brother the CEM65001B (in conjunction with our twitter contest), but thought the Mako XL needed the video treatment. Here is a refresher:

Movement: Orient 46943

Power Reserve: 40 Hours

Crystal: Mineral

Case: Solid stainless steel

Size: 44.5x13.3

Dial: Black

Bezel: Black, 60 click uni-directional

Lug Width: 22mm

Water Resist: 200m/660ft

Retail: $250 (use the promo code watchreport50 to get 50% off that)

As with other Orients we have owned or reviewed, this Mako XL sets something of a standard for value and style. The CEM75001B is a large, curvy diver that uses Orient's in-house movement featuring a competitive power reserve and a day-date feature. Orient claims the Mako XL is 13.3mm tall but it wears much lower due to the low-profile casebook and the long and wide case.

There is a lot to like about the styling: the bezel is a glossy, inky black while the dial is a flat rich black that makes the beautiful markers really pop. These are inlaid markers not painted on with a great chrome boarder and a good amount of luminous paint. The spear style hands stand out and add a splash of modern style to a somewhat classic design. The Mako XL is classy, simple, and legible.

The case is nicely finished with brushed and polished lugs, and polished sides. The bezel action is light but precise. The crystal is made of mineral glass, and is the one thing that would be nice to see changed (sapphire would be a good addition). The bracelet is also surprising quality at this price point; it uses pins to hold the links together, and to fix the bracelet to the case. The crown on the Mako XL is screw-down, and has a very good action. The positions for date and time setting are found with an audible click, and screwing down the crown is smooth and confident.

The Orient CEM75001B Mako XL is a great example of what is available on a budget these days. Orient lists Mako XL for $250 direct from their website, but they are constantly offering deep discounts. You can use the promo-code "watchreport50" to get 50% off any Orient watch. That makes the Mako XL only $125. If you are just getting into collecting watches, or are looking for a versatile dress diver for a suit or jeans, this is a great deal.

We would like to thank Orient for the review unit and the promo-code for our readers.

So you’ve got a few manual wind watches, and you’re looking for a very distinctive watch winder to put them in. Well, Bugatti and Origin Times has the solution for you. Fair warning though, it’s going to cost you.

The Bugatti Veyron has a 16 cylinder power plant, and now your watches can have one too. The Origin Time “Big Block” winder probably has more tech in it then most cars, allowing you to select the duration, direction, and even specific cylinders that you have your watches in. Of course, it’s a little ostentatious, but also vaguely cool. I’m conflicted.
